yeah i don't know that they even had a way to do it with the scan tool so i am not sure. and i am not adding a gauge i would assume the oil runs a little coller then the collant temp does

I guess the next best thing would be to shoot the incoming hose and the outgoing hose from the cooler with an IR gauge or temperature probe on your multimeter. That way you would know the temperature drop the cooler is providing.
If you wrote those numbers down you would have a good baseline in case anything happens like a rock hits the cooler or something. Maybe even take a paint marker and make a dot on the hoses so you can always go back to the same spot in the future.

good idea but i lost my ir gun a while back and no temp sensor on my fluke meter so i will just have to assume it is doing something until i can figure out a temp gauge

Sounds good, let us know how it works out!

ok it is installed and i am ready to eat so i will test it tomorrow. i let the motor run and get up to temp. and when i pulled one of the hoses on the unit there was oil so it must be getting oil fed to it now i just need to go for a ride and see if it helps keep the motor temps down

Is there a specific reason you mounted it with the inlet and outlet towards the center of the radiator???

Let me throw this theory out there... Others may disagree but feel free to comment... That's what the site is all about!
Theory:
I don't think you'll see a difference by looking at your water temp gauge if that's how your going to monitor the "motor temps". The stat is made to open at whatever temp stat you have, so the only way you could tell would be by the speed of the sweep of the needle. That would be next to impossible to gauge. This would not be considered an accurate test as it is subject to interpretation and not scientifically based. The margin of error would be very high as well.
Feel free to throw some thoughts my way if I'm thinking about this wrong!
I think the way to do it is to do it like we were thinking yesterday... borrow an IR gauge and shoot the oil incoming line to the cooler and compare it to the outgoing line. Then you will have a true delta T on the efficiency of the oil cooler. Then you can rest assured that all is good... As long as your oil pressure doesn't drop of course...

nope don't mount them facing down the inlet on top and outlet on bottom. it could have went the other way but my winch wiring was in the way

i was just hoping it would show on the temp gauge i don't think it will but you never know. and i think i may get a guage that goes inline with the return line that way i can see it after the cooler. but if you have a better idea let me know

I drove it around for about a half an hour and no leaks or loss of presure. So this has been a sucsesful upgrade.

I'm not sure how to hook an oil temp gauge up on a Cherokee. Or where to hook it for that matter. In the old days I remember my Dad having one that I thought he hooked into his oil pan... That was back in the mid 70's so it's a distant memory. I will do some research but in the mean time maybe someone else might know.
Mike

Where would you hook a transmission temperature gauge up on an AW4?
