I got a free set of Trailmaster AAL's. they are part# 1536. On the Trailmaster site the XJ calls for part# 1538.
The 1536 fits many Toyota, Mitsubishi, Isuzu and Datsun trucks.
Looking at the spring specs the free arch, length and width are identical between these 2 part numbers.
Would it be OK to put these in the XJ? I'm assuming the only difference would be spring rate but don't want to end up breaking anything.

I would say you should be fine- many people (myself included) experiment with different bastard packs which are basically a junkyard AAL. As long as it is a 2.5" wide spring it will fit, the lift you get may be more or less than the "advertised" amount.
I say go for it!
