ac compressor locked up
Tried to start 2000 sport, squealed like a pig. Opened hood and found broken belt and reddish brown dust between pulley and compressor.
1. Can it be rebuilt or replace?
2. Any wite ups or how to?
3. Any possible source of problem I should look at so I don't burn out the replacement out?
Thanks!
Mike

It is easier to replace. The only issue that you will run in to is you are going to have to go to a shop and have the refrigerant professionally evacuated. The compressors can be pricey. You can get a pulley and a bracket for around fifty dollars. You just won't have A/C any more.

Yes, just replaced it when I replaced fan clutch and water pump. Thanks for asking.
Yeah...just looked up some prices...ouch!
And thanks.. didn't think about refrigerant removal.
Any reason not to buy this part from a salvage yard?

Salvage yards can be a pig in a poke. You might get a good one you might not. Some salvage yards have warranties some do not. It can be expensive to have your refrigerant removed and if you have to get that done a few times it may not be cost effective. Seeing as it is getting to be winter time anyway the pulley on the plate may be the way to go. I know I do not always have the extra cash for a new compressor.

Refrigerant is already emptied.

Sounds like the clutch bearing went south. You need another clutch assembly.
A new clutch costs as much as a rebuilt compressor with a rebuilt clutch.
Rent a puller for removing the AC clutch, read how to do it, then get one from the JY.
$15? Careful, they are easy to destroy.
No need to discharge or refill it.

google search - there's got to be many sites that show it in detail.
The puller screws into threads on the front of the clutch, then a screw pushes on the shaft till it pops off.
try looking up Sanden or Mitsubishi compressors.
