Default AC compressor - help needed to see if it's working...

So I just got back from a fishing trip in Parry Sound (Ontario) and on the way up I heard a grinding from under the engine. I've tracked the sound back to the AC Compressor. I'm almost 100% that that's what's causing it as my friend recently filled it up and got it working again. I had it cranked the entire way on the trip so I'm guessing something within the compressor, which hasn't previously worked for years, has gone. Perhaps the bearings in the compressor pulley? That's where the grinding metal sound is originating from.

I tried some belt dressing as well as tests with the AC on and off. The sound is consistently grinding and gets worse when the AC is on. Even when it's in idle I hear a 'grinding'.

In any event I have a parts Jeep with a compressor. This Jeep does not run. I removed the compressor last night but before I install it I want to know if someone can help me out with the following:

Is there a way to determine if the compressor works?
If it doesn't work, is there an easy way to remove the clutch pulley from it as a means of replacing the existing pulley from the compressor where the bearings are shot?

Both are 1998 XJ's.

Year: 1995
Model: Cherokee
Engine: 4.0 Litre L6
Default

Does it blow cold at all?

Does the solenoid kick the clutch on?

Had the same sound thought it was the AC Compressor, when it was the tensioner pulley. Its right next to the compressor, and makes a whirring grinding sound. Just a thought.
