Default ABS Light won't go off...

I bought this 97 XJ that is a recovered stolen vehicle. Among other issues with it, the dash ABS light is on and won't go off. The local troopers won't pass it so that I can get it registered until the ABS light goes out. I redid the brakes (they needed it anyway) and they work fine, but the light still stays on. Any ideas on how to fix it right? I've heard a sensor on the axle might be bad, or a "CAB" controller may be the culprit. Anyone have some ideas? Or... any ideas on how to make the light go out so I can pass the inspection?
Thanks.

AFAIK, you could pull the fuse and the light will go out. Or you can take your dash apart and pull the bulb... I would check some ABS related sensors though, that may be the problem. I dont have ABS so I cant tell you what to check... When it comes to brakes, I would fix them the right way instead of trying to hide the problem...
