Wranglers have a Low Pinion axle aka Standard Rotation, XJ (pre 2000) have a High Pinion aka Reverse Rotation. This is just FYI, but there are some specialty tools that are required to set up gears, I'm not saying dont do your own gears, but if done incorrectly, can cost you some $$. My advice buy a manual for the axle you're going to rebuild/regear, study up, make a list of the tools needed, it will be a $ investment, but if you have friends that wheel, race etc, you may make you money back, some of the tools may be able to be rented.

A lot of 4 banger XJs have 4.10 gears. I'd hit up the salvage yard and look for a similar year one so you have the same axle. I have swapped over carriers, bearings, pinions and yokes without changing the set up at all in some of my former Jeeps but I wouldn't recommend doing that unless it's just a toy that you don't rely on for daily transportation. At least have the set up checked professionally if you do a straight parts swap
