yes, I have. on the belt.

BUT using it on the belt is entirely different from spraying it IN the alternator.

yes, a spark from the alternator can/will lite wd40 up.

I posted on safety...the way you wrote it, it sounded like you sprayed it IN the alternator. Frankly, I'm not concerned with how you feel about how I said it. I am only trying to make sure it can't be misconstrued by someone who's experiencing similar problems.

maybe I'm being a dick about it. *shrug* I don't log on forums to win popularity awards and I don't pretend to know everything...but general safety is something I've fubar'd enough times to know what to and what not to do.

now, can you explain to us the area the noise is coming from? get a mechanic's stethoscope (like $3 at parts stores etc. or harbor freight) and listen by pointing it in general areas.

the description "it sounds like a jet" is not very definitive.

usually the way you described it
it would be the fan clutch engaging the fan to soon or all the time just cus it turns when the motor is of don't mean it not bad they are temperature sensitive

I'm sorry when i start my 99 Jeep Cherokee 4x4 4.0L A/T with 125k on it. It makes a loud air noise and i only did a few things before i posted silly me (newb) .. So the alternator is makin the noise. I was wondering if someone could only help me out with saftey not the original problem that i posted.

I join forums to be popular i'm sorry was that against me cause i try and help people.
I would like to make friends and learn things also.
So has any one had this happen to there xj

Now that this out of the way and people got the saftey and no what the problem is JeepCoMJ can you give me any help on this question i posted or just more b/s in my thread help would be HELPFUL

Also guys i only sprayed wd-40 on the pulley it self with the jeep off and i sprayed some on a few other pulleys (only on the pulleys cause as saftey JeepCoMJ) says do not use it on the electric componates because it will cause fire

Now that my thread is all muddy of b/s thanks pal for all the HELP you posted i'm sorry you fubar'd everything you touch meaning you have no help for me

Ya i narrowed it down to that i have had it in mud up to the bumper (muddy water) not a bog or anything and also have drove in the river a few times so

I never looked into it that much i at first thought it was the clutch fan but when i looked into it more and noticed the alt at the bottom ( horrible spot for it ) kind of like fords dist. in the front

Also thanks for the help will try a air nozzle tomorrow i think it's had enough water threw it lol

then why is one of its main uses to displace water in electrical systems? it was actually designed for the aerospace industry with that and rust prevention purpose in mind.

WD-40 stands for Water Displacement 40th attempt (in case anyone wondered.)

it has areosol in it, which IS combustible. that is why it is a safety concern.

OP, how did you determine it is the alternator and not the a/c compressor?

as posted, the a/c could be short cycling (a failed sensor on the heater box can cause this. that is completely unlikely though.

if it is definately coming from the alternator, by this point if it sounds like a "jet" the alternator probably has mud in the brushes and would need rebuilt/replaced in the near future...flushing it with water and letting it dry will likely give you some time on it though.

can you locate where it is coming from? sounds to me like pinched tail pipe or maybe vacume leak!
