Default 99 xj not starting. Need help!!

Hey everyone, recently I've been having problems with my jeep not starting. A couple days ago it would start but die right away, it would stay running if I kept my foot on the gas. Now yesterday I went to start it and all it does is crank. It has a new battery and starter. Also it is getting spark and I can hear the fuel pump run when I turn the key. Not sure on what it could be. Any help is appreciated!

I also posted on your other thread. Since you replaced the battery there's a good chance your ECU needs to relearn TPS and IAC parameters. Also try turning the clamps on the battery and make sure they can't move. If they move a little re tighten the clamps.

There was a check engine light on. I didn't pull the codes or get a fuel pressure yet. I can't figure out how to delete the other thread. Lol

This happened before I replaced the battery as well. I put a new one in just to make sure that wasn't the problem. All the clamps are tight to. I'm thinking it could be a cps or ignition coil?

So what events led up to this? Was it sudden?

Since you replaced the battery this is kinda normal. Have you tried using the throttle to get it to start? If you do get it to start keep it running with the throttle for about ten minutes and see if it will idle on its own then. If not by that time the check engine light will probably be back on.

Gotta get those codes checked as soon as that light comes on. Your jeep is trying to tell you something. Two things that are a must for every xj owner, a multimeter and code reader.

Went to start it up the other day and it shut off right away. Went to try it again and got it to turn over by pressing the gas pedal. It would go to shut off if I let off the gas. Now yesterday it won't do anything except keep cranking.

1. Pull codes

2. Check for QUALITY of spark. You need a blue, snapping spark. Yellow/white/orange indicates a weak spark.

3. Fuel pressure. For a 99, you need approximately 49 psi. Must be tested with a fuel pressure gauge. No shortcuts.

Start there.....

What could a yellow/orange/ white spark indicate? Bad ignition coil?

Yup. Your ignition coil can be easily tested for both primary and secondary resistances with a manual and a meter.

Alright. I tested the spark and it's orangish colored not blue

Did you check the old ignition coil and determine it was faulty? Have you determined the exact number of the code(s)? Just lobbing parts at it (and possibly replacing good parts with bad) gets expensive and frustrating.
