99 xj gas gauge is off

99 xj gas gauge is off
Have had my 99 xj for a few weeks and i just filled up today for the second time, the first time everything seemed normal light went on at about 3 gallons left etc. This time though the light didn't come on it was about 1/8 of a tank or the lowest notch mark on the gauge. I filled up got 17.5 gallons and when the gauge went all the way up it looks like it went a notch or two past full not the normal full. any ideas what could be wrong?
