Default 99 XJ 4.0L Mid RPM Knock

Ok fellas, I picked up a clean little 99 cherokee about 2 weeks ago to run for the new daily driver. 124k on it. After fixing a few small issues I had to replace the water-pump as well. After the install I was over the engine bay filling the rad and checking for leaks, grab the throttle and manually revved the engine to (about) 2500rpm by ear. To my suprise I got a knock that sounds like a rod knock because it doesn't do it at idle. But anything past about 2500 rpm you get this clatter louder than valve train. I'm going to check the flex plate tomorrow after work. It has good oil pressure at idle and while driving (25-30 idle and 40 driving). No milky oil or anything like that. Anyone else chime in?

No sir it was a private owner. Chances are it made this noise before I bought it but I didn't hear it because I didn't physically open the hood, stand there and flip the tb to rev it up. Driving normal it shifts right before 2500rpm or right around there so the noise is kind of masked by road noise

Misinterpretation, what I meant was I didn't rev it by hand. You have to be over the engine bay to clearly hear it. I noticed the water pump pulley was loose due to the bearing going bad so I figured that was the noise I was hearing anyhow

Read on here fram filters are not good for Cherokees and some people experience knocks with them, I swapped mine out for a purolator and nothing. I cut open my old fram filter with tin snips and there was small particles of metal in the oil...guess its time to look and see why
