Default 98 Xj Sport Smoking, Fix it ticket

Okay so i have a 98 cherokee sport, lately on long drives its been smoking pretty intensely. I looked under it and found out that its caused by some sort of fluid leaking on my hot transmission.

Now the other day i got pulled over by a California Highway Patrol Cop and he gave me a fix it ticket, for my jeep's smoking. So i have to go explain to the Highway Patrol that my car is fixed and that Jeeps leak it's what they do. Do you guys know any threads i could print out or other cases where jeeps leaking have caused smoking? That way i at least have some examples to show the highway patrol?

if you do not fix it,are they going to sign it off? did they know at the time that it was a leak and not from combustion? If they did I doubt they will sign it off. I would look and see where it is coming from,it is possible it is coming from the rear main seal.

The cop had lliterally zero idea, he thought it was coming from the exhaust, ans that it needed to be smogged.

Just a side note, any information on these forums is not going to be relied upon in a court case. They may look at, but no offense to anyone, but we are not what the courts consider experts on this matter. However, if you went to a mechanic and had something written from them, that may be of more use. Just trying to help out.

Can you have an emissions check done and then take them that since he thought it was from the exhaust?

Just an idea.

I had the same thing. I just had my tranny rebuilt. have you lately or tanny fluid swap? well they really top it off when they fill it and when it gets super hott it expands and it leaks out through an overflow port I believe. of course then it lands on the Cat and exhaust and smokes heavily and you think your on fire. mine only did it one day pretty soon after my rebuild and hasnt since. if you have not touched your fluid lately then it could be something else but I think thats it. the key lis long drives AKA hot expanded fluid

chances are its leaking on to your exhaust not your tranny probably a valve cover gasket, oil filter adapter, or rear main seal check these first they are the most common leaks and then fix it no more problems with the law

Thanks I think this is exactly what I was looking for guys. I changed out the tranny fluid and put less in, so im gonna drive it tomorrow and see what happens. Then hopefully i'll stop by Highway Patrol, and explain the situation to him and that i have fixed it.

I just really don't want an unfair 250 dollar fine out of this ordeal, on top of the stress that it's caused me.
