Question 98 XJ Slow Acceleration in Drive, Normal in 1st.

Hey Guys,
New to the forum, so please let me know if this has already been discussed. Couldn't find anyone describing the same issue.

Anyway, I just picked up a pretty sweet XJ that is mildly modified (lift, tires, thats about it)... I've always wanted one, and this one was an awesome find. I bought it knowing it had a couple issues. First is overheating, but I've got a water pump and thermostat on the way (let me know if I should be getting more than just that)
Next is an acceleration issue, the transmission feels solid and changes gears normally, but It has a serious lack of power accelerating from a stop with the gear selector in "Drive" its almost like it is taking off in 2nd. If I put the gear selector in 1st, it has a normal amount of power, and gets up to speed normally... Guy I bought it from said it might be a filter not allowing trans fluid to flow? Does thdat sound like something it could be? Which filter would he be talking about?

I'm really excited to get this thing out to play around with, but I want to make sure it's not going to leave me stranded.

Thanks Everyone!
