98 xj with a slew of heater issues
Ok my 98 blows lukewarm air out on setting 4 but no other and only through the defrost vent. When I first got it the coolant was rust orange so I flushed it a few times till I got it looking pretty good. What are my problems? My ac also does not work but I think I know why that's a differs topic though and 70 mph and doorless is fine enough ac for me but I need heat this winter. Thanks

If it's only blowing out of the defroster you either have a vacuum leak or the blend door is not functioning. I would start by checking the vacuum ball under the front bumper passenger side. Also check all of the vacuum line from the ball all the way to the fire wall. If its only blowing on high (number 4 position) Your blower motor relay is shot. That is located on the passenger side under the dash in back of the glove box. And as for it only blowing warm more then likely the heater core is plugged with crud and it will need a good flushing.

Make sure you have "burped" the cooling system after you did your coolant flush.
Might be some air pockets in there which would not only affect your heater, but not be so good for you engine.
If thats not an issue, I would look at the hoses going to the heater core (that run on the left side of the valve cover)
If these are clogged it could affect the efficiency of the heater core.
Next after that would be the heater core itself. Remove the heater core hoses from the t-stat housing and what I would do is put a waterhose on one heater core hose, and water should be easily flowing out of the other hose. If not then most likely you have a clogged heater core.

These guys have it pretty much covered. Make sure you check out the heater control valve, too, it has a vaccum line going to it.
