So is heat and vapor lock not the issue?

It's free to try, so the price is right. Remove both cables from the battery, touch the cables together...just follow the instructions.

See if it still does what you're describing right after you reset the ECU. I'm curious.

Don't know, maybe...but this is free to do, so might as well give it a shot.

Troubleshooting problems like this can take a while to nail down. Process of elimination.

Do I disconnect and touch both positive and negative cables while off the battery? My positive cable won't reach to the other side of the battery

Danger alert! Do not touch positive cable to negative battery terminal!
The battery is not involved in this procedure. Remove both cables from battery, touch cables together. Do not let them contact battery terminals.

Anytime you disconnect a car battery, remove negative first. When reconnecting, install negative last. This will prevent accidental shorts.

Designed that way so you do not fry the jeeps electronics.

Do not bridge the battery posts/terminals, at all. EVER. That is a short, and the battery could explode. Hydrogen gas and sulphuric acid. Nasty combination.

I once accidentally bridged both sides of the battery when i dropped a wrench. A couple sparks, a little smoke. Thankfully, luckily, the wrench fell to the ground right away. Nothing blew up, and the cables were not connected so harm done. Except to the wrench. There is a burr where it got singed.

If you are going to disconnect either cable, cover the post with something non-conductive, just in case. I forget where i got them, but i use two rubber vacuum caps that fit over the posts.

I did the ECU reset this morning. I'm going to drive it around to get it to temp. See if I can't replicate the issue.

Cammy, does your XJ sit and idle for extended periods of time or only see low-speed use frequently?
