Does anyone know how far down inside the tank the 98 fuel pump sits? This is the top-mounted pump w/regulator on top. Mine goes down inside the hole-cutout, but does not seem to go far enough down on the gasket to truly seal, and does not allow the pump securing ring "nut" to get a good bite on the tank top threads. Is the pump supposed to sit such that the top flange sits directly onto top of the tank hole, or is there a "gap" of 1/16~1/8" or so?

The pump assy. rests on the bottom of the tank. The upper portion will be above the top of the threaded collar/gasket. The threaded ring will push the top down whem installed.

I did the fuel pump on my 93 a couple monthes ago and I had to have someone push down on the pump while I put the ring that holds it in place back on to get it on all the way.

To help get the plastic ring to seat properly I had to line up the plastic threads exactly with the threads on the tank, this took some time but when the threads are exact the pump will be flush with the tank. I used some grease to help lube the threads.

Slide the rubber gasket off of the fuel pump and mount it inside the tank. Use a light lube on the outside of the fuel pump, and then slide the fuel pump into place. I spent more than 1 hour trying to get it to go in, until I took the gasket off and installed it first.

Thanks, it helps to confirm.

My fuel pump goes all the way down to respting on the bottom of the tank, and then the outer shield slides up some. But it doesn't go down far enough for the top plate of the pump assy to sit on the flange of the fuel tank mounting hole. So am having trouble getting that nylon lock nut ring to bite onto the threads, since it seems like the fuel pump is sticking up "some". I'll post some pics soon.

I was able to get the fuel pump pushed down inside the gasket until the top plate rested basically on the flange of the gast tank mounting hole. And got the nut torqued down after a lot of trial and effort and sailor language %$@#&^!!

Pump runs nicely and pumps fuel out the fuel port. Now just need to get new j-bolts and new filler/vent hoses and put the fuel tank back in! Thanks!

Fuel pump is in, tank re-installed, Jeep runs fine. Lots of little things to fix now as Project XJ continues in Nanookland.
