98 Jeep Cherokee sometimes no start
So I have a 98 jeep cherokee, 2wd, auto, I6.
Sometimes itll start, sometimes it won't.
When It wont start the only way to get it to start is to grab the shifter and push it as hard as I can forwards while holding the key in the start position, sometimes this doesnt work either.
It wont start in neutral either.
So I'm thinking neutral safety switch, so I go to autozone and they have it for an AWD one, which I dont have, and a 3speed auto, which I dont have.
So the guy behind the counter looks it up for a grand cherokee with the I6 which has a 44re transmission I think, will this one work? or is this not my problem? If not any ideas on what it is?
Thanks.

Save your money.. for now.
Use the search feature here and look up NSS* cleaning or neutral safety switch and you'll find several links to tech articles detailing how to clean and relubricate the NSS to repair it. This is a very common problem on the AW4 transmission in the Cherokee.
It'll take just a few hours and not cost you a cent.
