98 jeep cherokee gas guage problem

98 jeep cherokee gas guage problem
Hey! I have a 98 jeep cherokee with a 4.0 auto. I filled it and the next thing I knew the guage was showing empty, then almost full then at half. Is this a bad gas gauge or is it a bad sending unit? Any help would be great.
