Default 98 cherokee Turn Signal problems

Hi all,

Not an expert, but I'm handy.

We have a 1998 cherokee. It has turn Signal issues. At first it would sometimes blink turn on solid while turning, then it went to only blinking briefly, to not working at all. Everything else on the turn signal switch works fine (hazards, high beams).

I wend to O'Reilly and got a BWD replacement switch (http://bwdbrand.com/Online%20%20Cata...g/Content.aspx)

This switch didn't help. I exchanged it once just to be sure I didn't get someone else's returned switch. No change.

I looked int he book and see the next part up the line is what my Haynes book calls the "combination flasher and connector". I looked at that part and it looks to have some goopy tape wrapped around it. Is this part a relay of some kind? Is it the next thing I should change out? IF not, what should I be looking for?

It seems odd to me, the non-expert, that the hazards work just fine, but the turn signals don't. That really made me think it was just the switch and to further complicate this, the BWD switches both look like they could just as easily be someone's returned bad switches as they could be new ones. Fingerprints and whatnot all over them both when they came out of their unsealed boxes.

So I'm kind of stuck as to whether I should order a different brand of switch or try a different part. Hoping one of you experts has some tips.

Thanks. Sorry for rambling.

Try the combo flasher, this is what happens when they fail. Although there was another member here who went through 5 or 6 (i forget the exact number) of replacement switches before getting one that worked. The quality has gotten really bad.

Is this the combo flasher?

I'm confused about what to get for it. The book calls it the comination flasher and connector, but I don't see that listed on parts sites.

or maybe this one? http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...mString=search

Is that the one that plugs in under the dash?

The one under there now is covered in gooey tape. Is that normal? can I just remove the tape, or am I missing something about removing that relay?

That looks like the right part.

Eta: either one looks right. It's taped up behind the kick panel, near your left knee when you sit in the driver's seat.
