i have a 98 cherokee classic with about 160,000 miles. i started her up, put it in reverse, went a few feet, and it died. tried restarting, the engine sounds to be turning over, but no start. when i jumped it, it ran fine for the day but with the check engine light on. the next morning it did not start again. the battery was replaced last year. any ideas??

im new to this forum, and i dont know a whole lot about cars. i do have mechanical ability so if its something easy i can probably fix it. if it is overly technical or requires removing multiple pieces of the car to get to it, i would like to know. any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

 

can you hear the fuel pump pumping gas ?? if not then its probably it, before you go ahead and replace, check the fuse of the fuse of the fuel pump first and make sure you dont have any blown fuse.

That check engine light is going to be a BIG clue. Find somebody with a code reader or a scan tool and read that code. Post it here for comment.

The fact that the check engine light came on at the same time as the symptoms is NOT coincidental.
