I had mine go bad on my old 88 XJ and my friend at the dealership had me purchase a rebuilt from the auto parts store. The dealer price was @600.00 and he replaced it within 30 minutes. So I not sure if there is anything special to do when replacing the unit.
My ECM went bad on my 91 pontiac Sunbird convertable and I took the time to replace it myself. Unplug the battery so there is no chance of a static charge shorting out the new replacement. I also found that reconditioned units from the auto parts stores, may not come with the computer IC chip that controls all the settings for your vehicle. There is usually a label on the new unit that states to open the unit and seat the chip from the old unit into the new IC slot. I had to do this to my unit. Really a simple procedure. Your old IC chip was programmed for your specific year, make and model. The reconditioned unit is usually just the PC board and connectors. I would guess it's the same for a Jeep Cherokee.
