Default 98 Cherokee Brake problems.....

Hey guys long time reader not so much a poster though but I’m having some problems so hopefully someone can give some good input.

I have a 98 XJ 4x4 and about a month ago she blew the steel brake line tothe rear brakes. No big deal i replaced the line bled the brakes and they worked fine until last night.

We got a huge rain storm here in AZ and most of the streets were flooded by a couple feet of water. I had to drive through several large puddles of water (up to the doors) to get around. Later that night i was driving home and the brakes seem to be braking unevenly.

When I first started the Jeep last night and braked going about 5mph one ofthe tires locked up while the others kept spinning. really freaked me out so I blew a stop sign because it wouldn’t brake. After a few min of going through my hood going really slow and seeing if it would do it again. Every time i hit thebrakes I had a loud clunk coming from the rear as it came to a slow stop. Then after about 5 min the brakes started working with no clunk and no locking up.Just some sponginess in the pedal. So i drive home and this morning same thing at first the brakes were braking more to the rear then the front with clunkingin the rear. No locking this morning though. Then after 5 min or so no more clunking or anything just about an inch or more sponge on the pedal.

So what do you guys think? Water or air in brake line? Master Cyl problem?

Years ago, I had that happen to my 68 Mustang after driving through a deep puddle. Bled the brakes and everything was fine after.

Your brake shoes and pads got wet. Drive around with them lightly applied to dry them out.
