Default 97 XJ transmission

I have a 97 Cherokee Sport XJ and the transmission only shift into three gears...I traded for this and just put in a new 242j T Case. drove it and shifted finr thru three gears. My question, is this a three speed or a four speed w O/D transmission. How would I find out.

The AW4 is a 4 speed transmission (whats in a name) and yes, "has OD".
You can tell your torque converter locking up by seeing the rpm's suddenly drop somewhat when going past +/- 70 km/hr (you will have to convert that to mph for you guys).

Could be a bad shift solenoid, but I'm not an auto trans guru.

Still valueable information to know.

It's an electronically shifted, if the OP wants to fix it that may give him a jumping point to start researching.

Thanks for the info. I don't know what transmission is in the jeep. I am guessing it is the AW4. It is not shifting into 4th. I am going to try filter and fluid change and the shift solenoid.
