Default '97 XJ Shift Soleniod How-To??

Hello all!

I've searched around here for quite a bit trying to find a How-to on the XJ shift soleniod swap with no luck thus far. I appologize if it's hiding in plain sight but I'm just not seeing it!!! If someone could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated!!

Also where is the best place to purchase these soleniods that others have found?

Thanks again for any help offered!!!

To find the solenoids you can use http://www.electricaladvantage.net/. They sell also on eBay.

As far as changing it is pretty straightforward. You have to drop the pan and you will have access to the solenoids. Unplug them (be careful the connectors can be very brittle and brake..) and replace them. That's really all there is to it.
But do you know for sure you have to replace them?

Yup getting P0756 Open circuit on Soleniod B. Have to do the manual shifting once the soleniod decides to stop working. Are the Soleniods you listed as good as the Mopar units?
Is there a favorite/superior ATF fluid? Also fill quantity?
TQ specs on reinstalling the pan bolts?
Just don't want to mess anything up!

*Edit* Also thanks for the link!

For the solenoid, compared to OEM units, I really don't know. Only time will tell. I considered that since this is all this company does it is good quality, and I was not willing to spend the extra money. But that's me. It has been there for over a year now and so far no issues.

The recommended fluid for the AW4 is Dexron III/Mercon.
Last drain I did when dropping the pan took 1 Gal (3.78 liters). Just put that quantity and then drive and check the fluid after it is warm. Adjust as needed.
Torque for pan bolts is 50-70- in/lbs.
Hope that helps.

Thank you so much for your assistance!! I greatly appreciate it!
It's still too cold here in Indiana to be crawling under the Jeep but once spring hits in full force I will be getting this done. The price is definatly right for those soleniods, I will give them a shot!
Once project is complete I will update!

No problem. Good luck with the project. Don't hesitate if you have other questions. That's what this forum is about.

Nice thread, great info guys. Waaay often wires or their connections are the problem. I think the plug to the trans solenoids is there behind the dipstick, (grey?). I might spray that with CRC contact cleaner and shove it on and off a couple times, and take a REALLY good look at the wires before dropping the pan. (I guess you know 'open circuit" could be a bad connection, or broken wire)

Is it working OK, any other codes? Radi, amongst others might be helpful here.

Thank you DFlinstone for jumping in. I may have jumped the gun here. I assumed testing had been done. Below is some advice I had received on the forum to test the resistance at the connector in the engine bay. Keep in mind that my codes were P0740 and P0743, related to the lock up solenoid but procedure and wire inspection would be the same.
<<Unhook the roundish black connector in the engine compartment near the tranny dipstick(7 wires). Coming from the transmission, the pin you wanna check with the ohmmeter (black lead to battery negative, red lead to pin) is the one with white wire with black stripe. Should read 11-15 ohms, if not inspect the wiring . I ordered solenoid 3, part # 5016121AA and believe this will solve my problem. The two pins next on the row, tannish with white stripe and bluish with white stripe, the other two solenoids, should also read 11-15 ohms>>

Well..you are welcome! I'm learning here as well. I actually have, and use a wheel made of wood, but I'm progressing...

Thanks for the tips guys! I haven't trouble shooted yet. The XJ will shift fine for awhile then eventually will stick in 3rd from a dead stop. Manual shifting takes care of that once it happens. If I shut the car off and restart it works fine for awhile again. Lol. I just picked the XJ up this weekend so I'll be fixing the minor issues this spring. Otherwise the Jeep seems to run great for 160K on the clock.

theyre not mopar parts

chrysler dealer wanted $300 per solenoid, parts store wasnt much better

got all 3 for $200 from ebay seller that came recommended on another board

only my OD solenoid was bad, but it was flush time anyways, so replaced them all, kept the 2 good used ones for later

I had the same problem. As the trans heated up it would have to be manually shifted. A set of solenoids fixed the problem.
