I have a '97 XJ, I was following the code instructions for getting the codes, and the "hold the odo reset and switch it to on" method only ran through a cluster test sequence..
The "on-off, on-off, on-off" method gave me the following codes..
12
21
21
43
Apparently, these are OBDI codes, but I have a '97.. Are they still applicable? I know that the O2 sensors have both been replaced, I have been chasing these issues down for 2 years now..
If I get a real code scanner, will I be able to get the P codes?

Maybe ask one of the auto parts stores to scan it for codes. It's my understanding some/few auto mfgs started using OBD-II in '94/'95......all were required to use OBD-II beginning with their '96 models.
I have had a elmscan 5 for two years now and it has been truly helpful. It does everything a normal handheld does and it lets you view live data out of your sensors. Once you outgrow the software that comes with the scanner you can move on to "ScanXL" which gives you nearly as much data access in the ecu as a dealer's handheld unit.
On my 96 xj country this scanner works just fine.

Sometime mid-year 1997, the ability to retrieve codes with the "key-on, key-off" technique went away. Yours however did pull codes.
BUT even if you can pull codes on your 97 with that technique, you will only get the two digit code. The complete P0XXX code is much more helpful at getting to the root cause of your problem. That complete code can only be had with a code reader or a scan tool. Never a bad thing to have one of these tools on hand, or some parts stores like AutoZone will read your codes for free.
Pull the full code(s) and post them here for comment. And also be sure to include any SYMPTOMS you have. Knowing what they are is also very important to the troubleshooting process.

Exactly what I was looking for, thanks for all the replies from everyone..
Symptoms are, after a cold start (sitting overnight), it has a lot of misses and you have to modulate the throttle.. if you just get in and go, with normal throttle, it will feel as if it is just coasting, but let up off the throttle and gently ease into, and it's ok. Push down the throttle about 1/2 way, and it's as if you didn;t push it at all.. and then it just picks up out of nowhere and carries on...
