I have a 97 jeep Cherokee sport 4x4 with a 4.0 strait 6 with 138k miles.

do know this car sat for a long time here in SoCal, last time it was registered was 2018, someone had me tow it off their property because they didn’t want it and I ended up buying it.

when I start it up sometime it will idle for a min or 2 and then start to rough idle. And will sometimes make popping noises when I try to accelerate.

here are the things I have replaced -

Spark plugs
spark plug wires
cap and rotar.
the internals of the distributor.
map sensor
Idle air control valves
Intake air temp sensor
Throttle position sensor
crank position sensor

new fuel pump

blew out all fuel lines and fuel rail

new fuel injectors

new ignition coil.

cleaned the throttle body.

ran Lucas upper cylinder club and injector cleaner threw it.

I have checked wiring and repaired everything I could find that was broken or chewed.

I have checked grounds

it has a brand new battery

the alternator is charging normally.

no check engine light

I am as a loss, idk what else to do, I’m tired of throwing money and parts at this thing. I’d much rather be throwing cool toys on this thing but I want it to run good before that.

A good scan tool w/live data can tell you things to help your issue. Save on unnecessary parts

 

Yeah me and my dad had his really expensive scan tool on it and it didn’t show us any problems, yet it still popped and bangs on acceleration and would randomly idle rough.
