Are center consoles the same for automatic and manual in a 1997 Jeep Cherokee like the bezel where the boot and shifter go?
the console is the same. the bezel where the shifter is, is interchangable. so if your doing a auto-manual, or manual-auto swap, you just need the boot/shifter bezel.

It's certainly doable. Based on the pics I've seen of 96 XJ floors it looks like a 97+ console will screw in to the brackets near the shifter, and you'll have to remove the bracket at the back (that holds up the HVAC and armrest junk) and drill some holes for the 97+ bracket.
