Default 97 AW4: need replacement info

i need to replace the aw4 in my 97 4x4 cherokee se asap. the junkyard has several 2001 trans... i work at a Jeep dealer and the tech notes show that 1991-1998 have one speed sensor and 98-01 have 2 speed sensors.

i don't work on Jeeps and the Jeep tech here doesn't remember any difference..... is there a way to put a 01 aw4 in my 97..maybe a simple jumper harness or is there no way?

i'm assumeing that a 91-96 trans is the same and a 97 has different connectors?

I'm wondering if the newer trans 99-01 will work with the earlier models by plugging the unused sensor hole... I haven't compared the sensor fittings first hand yet. I'll be looking at pulled 96 and 99 AW4s next week and take a look.

read the thread he just posted.. it clearly states what needs to be done to swap. it's the pulse count that messes everything up, you have to build a circuit board.

I've seen that thread countless times. No, you don't HAVE to build a board... seems easy to me.

"swap the transmission tail housing, sensor drive rotor, and output speed sensor as shown here by Frank Z to make this work."

real quick update:
ended up using a 92 trans (super clean) swapped out the entire wiring harness, removed rear clips off the connectors for the front 2 solenoids to straighten out the wires(you'd have to be in there to know what i'm talking about if you've never had one apart) and swapped the rear solenoid from the 97 to the 92 trans so the wire would reach.

filled the trans with ATF+4 (i don't wanna hear it) and took it for a spin around the block and everything worked great.....till i blew a rear brake line. new one should be here and installed by the weekend.
