So you bought a parts Jeep that is 8 years older than your current Jeep, and are now considering making the 88 your main rig and harvesting parts from your 96? Just out of curiousity, why?
You would have to take the cases apart and swap out the input shafts. I'm assuming the 88 has a tcase, it just doesn't work? You would need to take that input shaft and put it in the 96, in place of the one in the 96 tcase.

exactlly right gpXJ, i got it for free from a family freind.. my 96 is rotted from being a northern truck. so i was gonna use it for parts, cause all the motor and tranny parts are still good. the 88 runs but the t case is missing out of it.
