Default 96 Xj popping when turning

Hey guys. I have a 96 XJ that I’ve had for a few months. It’s been popping really bad when I turn left and right and I guess this is a common issue but I have yet to find a solution. I tightened the steering box, the track bar brackets at the frame, upgraded lca’s, replaced upper control arm bushings and yet still it keeps popping. It does it at low speed and high speed, on jack stands and on the floor. Kinda stumped at this point but it’s only coming from the drivers side and i can feel it from inside the car

Common popping sounds come from:

- Ball joints
- Axle U-Joints
- Wheel bearings

If it does it while turning and not moving, likely cause is ball joint or wheel bearings.
If it does it while turning and moving, likely cause is axle u-joints.

Hope this helps.

Did you check the track bar itself at both ends? On the axle it sits in a bushing. At the frame, it's like a tie rod end. Check the end and the hole it mounts to in the bracket. Sometimes the hole ovals out and can cause a clunk when you turn.

This would be in addition to vroomvroom's suggestions.

I have not checked that yet but i will tomorrow. I have noticed that the track bar has slight play if i twist it forward and backwards but i don’t know if that’s normal and both of the bushings are popped too but all of it is tightened

I’ll check it tomorrow and get back to u. It does it both while sitting and moving but more so when I’m driving on asphalt. It still does ur on other stuff too but more aggressively on the road and at lower speed

just following up. I tightened the 4 bolts on the track bar bracket where it’s frame mounted and i guess I didn’t use enough elbow grease yesterday 😂 but the popping is pretty much gone. I still hear a faint one when I turn but nowhere near as bad as it sounded before. It was like something was snapping off. Thanks guys
