96 xj cluster issue
Hi everyone after searching all over for an answer to my question I gave up and decided to make my own thread. My instrument cluster is not working correctly specifically My Gas, Tach, speedo all do not give off any readings (well the gas always shows way past full). The other guages do work like the oil, temp, an battery.
This started happening a while ago and I have been pushing it off because its not a huge deal but it is very annoying. I cleaned the engine ground that hooks to the dipstick and the gauges all worked for about half a day. Today I tried changing out the ground under the dash and rerouting it to another location and it worked for about ten min then completely stopped. Ive cleaned the terminals behind the gauge and added dielectric grease and am sure they are making a good connection.
I'm starting to think that it is my cluster itself but id rather it be something cheaper to fix. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it.

Check for any blown fuses, and check the battery cables. Remove and clean (you can clean up the fuses with fine grit sandpaper if they look tarnished). There should be two grounds just below the ignition coil. Clean those up as well. Look for another next to the battery. Not sure if the 96 has them, but for the 97 and up there are two more on the driver side inner fender, near the airbox. The ground strap to the firewall isnt a ground per say, but it never hurts to freshen that up as well.
Only other thing i can think of atm is to disconnect the crank sensor and turn the key to RUN. If the gauges comes back, the sensor has shorted.
