Default 96 no start in park

Ok so my lady friend has a 96 sport 4x4 4.0 aw4. Stock. She called me tonight after I left said her jeep wouldn't turn over. I asked her to put it in N and see if it would start. And it would. I told her most likely the NSs is going bad. I just wanted to make sure that my diagnosis is on the right track. I'm going to have to replace it for her soon

yup. sounds right to me.
not a fun job, but if you're gonna replace it, no worries about breaking the old one. just be careful with the new one, they're not cheap.

You are on the money. You can rebuild the switch to save some coin. Not a killer job once it's off, several good step by step write ups around.

hello,i had the same problem with my xj when i bought it a year ago..soon after i bought it..i removed the NSS and took it apart,i cleaned it out and and i payed attention to the 2 copper spring loaded contacts that sit in the arm of the unit..i dressed up the copper contacts gave the inside a grease and i put it all back together refitted it to the xj and with a little adjustment on the bolt..its working as it should..starting in P and N and the reverse lights work.this saved me around £30 on a second hand NSS.a job well worth doing.

Ok so she's got her pops truck today. I'm going to the junk yard and pulling one off rebuilding that and swapping it with hers and rebuilding hers and setting it on the shelf untill my rig needs one this seems like a decent write up and I'm going to follow it http://bc4x4.com/tech/2010/jeep-neut...ty-switch-nss/

Ok went to the local yard. Found a 96 and that write up was handy. It took me 10 mins to get it off. Took it home opened it up and the thing was pristine inside. Cleaned the grease out polished it up and reassembled it. Got my girls jeep it started fine today for me swapped it and I get starts in park only no back up lights and not start in n position. No matter where it's adjusted too. I rebuilt her old one and have it sitting on the shelf. I gave it back to her and told her if it acts up again I have another rebuilt ready to go. I cannot believe how goddamned expensive they are new
