I have a stock 96 cherokee sport, I know the original owner and he always said that he ordered it with a lower gear ratio for pulling a trailer.

Is there anyway to confirm this? maybe serial # or something.

I plan to gut pretty much all the interior, put a easy diy 3" lift with 33s with eventually a lot of body trimming and a roll cage. It will be a trail rig only and on the trailer anywhere else.

 

Should be a tag on the diff cover between 2 of the bolts and gear ratio is stamped into it

If it was ordered with it you can request a factory build sheet from Chrysler. They contain all the codes that went into it, including gear ratio.

I have not heard of being able to order deeper gears in an XJ since the 1980s, however.
