Unhappy 96 cherokee postal jeep goes dead

96 cherokee 4L, HO runs great for 2 hours and a couple hundered mail stops. THEN will die only when coming to a full stop at a mailbox. Pop the hood and let cool for 20 minutes and will finish out the day (2-3 hours).

Replaced coil, fuel rail had pressure after event, no codes returned by OBD tester, venting the gas tank immediately did not fix either.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Dave

X2 ^^^

Maybe just get some 1" square tubing to gap the rear hinge first. Maybe that will help diagnose the problem and treat it (with any luck). At least this way, you won't have to cut the hood to find out.

i've seen people use washers on the hinges to allow for a little cooling.

That is essentially what I am suggesting, but you would have more control over the amount of gap you make. Good thinkin . The write ups I've seen on this topic, however, indicate that you need at least 3/4" gap to clear the weather stripping on the firewall.

I think this is a good idea since we're not exactly sure what the cause of the problem is. On a postal jeep, I'd imagine there is tons of stop and go and little constant driving to help clear out carbon and all that other junk. Maybe a seafoam treatment (). The OP may want to drive the highway for while to clean out his engine a bit too. I'd also check/replace the simple stuff too, like the air filter, and fuel filter and stuff. I'd start with the simple/cheap stuff first. It is my nature.

I'd imagine this resourceful forum can get the postal heep pack on track in a jiffy.
