Sry to thread jack, but I was scrolling thru and seen the part about 96 fuel pump regulators. I have one and kinda wanna have this info on the regulator. So how do I tell if its on my pump or the rail? I have a late model 96 with a 29-spline 8.25". Is it better/easier to replace if it is indeed on my rail?

 

Not true my front is disconnected and rear is connected and new. I run just fine.

 

If you have a late model '96 it's probably in the tank. I have a late '96 as well and have the same problem. Crossing my fingers that it never fails. I think only the very early '96 models have the rail mounted regulator.

If it's on the rail you'll see it there- vacuum line attached to it. Very simple to replace. Picture below:

 

Actually it is true. The O2 sensor(s) before the cat are used to control the fuel mixture. Using an after-cat sensor to control fuel would be pointless as the O2 levels have been altered by the cat.
The after-cat sensor only serves to monitor cat operation. If the readings from the pre and post cat O2 sensors match- the cat has failed.

Not to say it isn't possible for the engine to run fine without the front O2, normally they don't but not always. There are probably thousands of cars being driven every day with failed O2's.

 

Yea true. So if its in the tank how hards it to replace. Ive done my fuel pump with out dropping the tank. How hards the regulator

 

It isn't any harder to change than the fuel pump, it is part of the same assembly.
Problem is the part isn't available, not as an individual part or as a complete assembly. Omix used to make them (part # S-4798941) but they discontinued them and stock appears to be gone.
You can get replacement pumps but nothing else. If you need the regulator you'll have to buy used, or convert to a 97+ fuel system from the rail on back.

Are you aware of the cat recall that affects only '96 XJ's? I got a brand new Mopar cat and downstream O2 sensor from the dealer free of charge at 190k + miles.

They'll want to re-program the PCM too, the orig. programming didn't always sense a cat failure. My replacement cat failed at 200K, lol. They won't replace it again.

 

Yea I was aware. It ate the orig. Cat at 160k im at 201k now. i got a new cat and sensor myself. I didnt want them to flash my jeep. I hate dealer repair. So if it goes bad I gotta replace everything from rail back? Crappy.

 

have you replaced yours and where did you get it? can i just throw a inline fuel regulator on and keep the faulty one that in the tank?

 

with out seeing the Jeep and reading through the info, my gut says O2 sensor! Unplug your front one and see if it runs better...however if the harness is burnt or shorted then unplugging it will not help.

 

I asked my dealer not to reflash and they didn't...

 

I just didnt want the hassle really. I had already replaced it probably 5000 miles before I found the recall. I didnt want someone else molesting my jeep but me.

 

I haven't had to replace my regulator yet. I have no idea where to find a new unit, I emailed Omix asking about availability- they replied that the only source for the '96 units was Chrysler NOS- and they are all gone.
I'd think you could fabricate something, perhaps adding an external unit with a return line, but haven't tried it personally. I see no reason it would not work.

 

sorry to bring this post back up but mine is doing the same and i have the early model 96.
Mine even bogs to the point where it will just die out leaving a parking lot. I have no clue why
