Default a 96 cherokee 2 door with 160K and a working tcase

*I posted this in my old thread on the 94 with the tcase issue, but I decided it didn't really belong there. Hope I'm not breaking forum rules here...I couldn't figure out how to delete the other one.

Alright folks-

Decided against the last one (the 94 with the blown tcase). Locally, there are a lot for sale and that one was the same price with higher miles as some of the newer ones with less miles and the newer ones were all running. So, screw that.

Found a 1996 white two door for $500 (though I bet I could get it down a little). Needs a door hinge, brake line in the rear, and shocks. Runs, 160K on the engine. Bare bones interior, no power anything (honestly, a positive in my book). The owner sent some pics but I don't know whether or not I can post those here. I tried, but they're large. Someone mentioned something about rockers and I'm not sure what rockers are, but it looks like a rusty area on this. I assume this refers to the rocker panels. What are the collective thoughts on this? Worth it?

Agreed. I'd test drive it (keeping in mind it needs new shocks) and if it drives straight and runs strong, I say buy it. The door hinge and brake line could easily be found at a junkyard, and a set of Monroe (or even junkyard) shocks will put it right back on the road.

Drive it, put it thru it's paces...
If you like, get it. Brake lines are cheap, shocks aren't too bad and the door hinge is not all that bad. Rusty rockers? Yeah, welcome to the club, my 92's are in bad shape.
I'd get it, I like that thing, nice little 2DR, except I would need PW and PDL's. Maybe P-Mirrors too. I've become spoiled...

Be leary of rust in the floor pan area. Rusty rocker panels can mean rust in the floorboards sometimes. The rest is all cake to fix. So, as long as when you go to test drive it, your feet don't go through the floor. I'd say buy it.

Hey thanks for the replies and advice guys. I'll be looking at it sometime next week as long as my astro van sells this weekend. I'll let you know how I make out!

Hey again guys...

Just a few questions:

1. I plan on doing a budget boost of 2 or 3 inches and riding on no larger than 31 inch tires. This will be enough for my needs. I picked up a book outlining all of this, but is there anything else I need to worry about in terms of this XJ as a base, anything that I need to watch out for aside from the obvious (obvious being driveability, amount of rust, etc.)
2. I also plan on occasionally using this to tow a light utility trailer with a motorcycle. Can I do a budget boost with this in mind without having to replace a crapload?
3. I don't know why I put a three. In short, I guess I just want a laundry list of things to check and places to look on these particular vehicles to make sure I'm finding a good one.

Thanks,
Nate
