Im still having issues with my 96 4.0 AW4, i have to manually shift it or it starts in 3rd gear. I have replaced the TPS,TCU, unplugged 3 connectors near the fire wall and cleaned as well as cleaned up various grounds.. I check all fuses in the box under the hood. I DO NOT have a inline fuse located near the TCU, so that rules that out... I guess im looking at solenoids? im going to check the ohms from the 7 wire grey connector and see if they are functioning... i just dont see how both would crap out at once.

this is driving me nuts, anyone have any suggestions.

 

I don't have enough experience with the AW4 to offer much advice, but I would definitely check the ohms on the solenoids. Its free, and sounds like they might be acting up.
