Unhappy 95 XJ Did I Fry my Transmission?

I have a 95 XJ with a Auto Transmission 4Hi-4LO and a 4.0 HO. I was on a rescue mission up in our local peak running in about afoot and a half of slush ice snow for about 4- 5 hours straight. When I got back down I took it out of 4lo and back to 2wd. When I pulled out on the road it acted like I was power braking it, so I stopped. Then tryed backing up and it goes backwords great. Put it back in drive and samething. Pulled the dipstick and it looks brownish and the stick has a carbin like looking residue stuck on it. Very thin and black. What do you think? Has anyone else had a similar experience? Did I Fry my Transmission?
Thanks for your thoughts!

"carbin like looking residue stuck on it"

It's possible it is friction material, whats the fluid level like? If you were in 4lo and kept moving you could keep the RPMs' up it seems like the pump would pass enough fluid to keep the trans cool. Do you have an auxillary cooler as well? Maybe if nothing else drain the trans fluid & drop the pan so you can have a look in there.

Make sure you don't have ice or water in the trans wiring harness either.

Agreed with Turbo on changing the fluid and inspecting the pan.

Thanks turbo, fluid level was reading full. No I dont have an auxillary cooler, just stock. When I arrived on scene I did leave the vehicle in for low and shut it off for about an hour while we searched , Located then loaded our subjects, I don't know if that really would matter, Or would it?

Thanks radi, I'll Probably take it down to the shop since I don't have anywhere to work on it right now with the snow and slush and wind outside. My jeep unfortunately doesn't fit in my garage.

Thank you all very much for your input! It' is very much appreciated.
I will definitely come back and let you know what I find out.
