Could be that. But a common problem with XJ's is the CPS you could be losing the signal. I had a similiar problem to yours.

I unplugged and replugged it back in and had no problems anymore.

When was the last time you had a tune up?

easy things to start with would be to check for vacuum leaks or fuel pressure problems

It could be the wiring harness, I had a very similar problem with mine when I was in the trails I was goin through a puddle when the jeep shut off we towed it out and looked in the back and noticed a tree branch hanging off the bottom of my car. We pulled that out and saw wires from the wiring harness hanging down and we plugged them back in and drove away. A few days later the car died and after lookin at it realized it was a bad connection in the wiring harness.

If you know for sure it is losing spark, my first guess would be CPS. This little bad boy gives you spark timing signal and fuel injector pulse all in one little package. Disconnect it at the firewall and read it out. Take just a couple minutes. Sometimes just disconnecting and reconnecting will get it working. If the CPS checks good, I would do the fuel pump pressure check next.
