Default '95 Cherokee automatic died- started again, mechanics at a loss

Hi-- I'm posting this for my dad, who is on the road and couldn't get to the forums. He has a '96 Cherokee 4X4 automatic which is regularly maintained and taken care of and is at 111,000 miles. On a freeway trip he stopped for a drink and the Jeep sputtered out and died as he tried to start it. After a few tries, it started again and 15 minutes later on the freeway the engine sputtered out and he had to pull over. It was dead. He had a tow carry him into town but the mechanics, who we trust and have been doing business for 30 years, can't find what's wrong with it. And the Jeep started right back up and runs fine.

Any thoughts on insights on problems this could be?

Sounds like a text book fuel pump "going out." they dont always just die. sometimes they stop. then start. then stop again. i had the EXACT same thing happen to me in the middle of nowhere texas. next time it dies apply voltage to the pump while watching fuel pressure and smack the bottom of the fuel tank with your hand pretty hard. if pressure builds when you smack it the pump has a loose contact.

X2 when your pops takes it to the shop to have it fixed dont be surprised if they cant find anything wrong. you have to tell them its the fuel pump. cuz at times it may still get good fuel pressure.
