Default 94 xj with older AC system?

I'm trying to fix the ac on my xj. It blows but never gets cold. A mechanic friend of mine looked at it and said my compressor is bad but I also don't have any refrigerant it being a old R12 system that was never retrofitted. So I figured I'd replace the compressor, recharge it and I'd be good to go, given there's no leaks. Here's where things get weird, I bought a replacement compressor (SD7H15) and receiver/accumulator/drier that are supposedly OE for 94 xjs. However when I'm installing everything none of fittings are the right size, I look at my old compressor and it's an SD709. I definitely shoulda checked the part numbers first. Anyways all the information I can find says that this model of compressor (SD709) and the associated parts (hose assembly etc.) doesn't fit the 94's. So what I'm wondering is if this AC system is not original to this vehicle? I'm the third owner and have had it for about a year and half.

What is the most reasonable work around to this mess? Get a different compressor that fits my hoses and fittings or track down the fittings (which seem impossible to find/verify if they actually fit) and get new hoses? Either way it's a huge PITA so far.

Could definitely use some help here.
