I'm having an issue with my Water Pump Pulley... Awhile back, I had to replace my idol pulley because the bearing broken, with the same belt. And I think I made the belt too tight when I replaced it, because after two weeks, the water pump pulley started making awful noises.

So while I was on the highway, the fan cought the belt and ripped it up because the water pump pulley was pushing it out. So I replaced it and this time decided to make the belt looser. So now the belt doesn't want to push out and catch the fan, but it's still making a awful noise..

The water pump pulley is not leaking, and the engine has 230K miles. And I'm almost certain it's the bearing that's broken. But to be honest, I'm no car mechanic.

So my question is, is it possible to replace the water pump pulley with the bearing without any real in-depth labor. (I included some videos to give better insight of what I'm talking about (after I replaced the belt and made it looser.))

The bearing is part of the water pump. The pulley bolts to the water pump shaft. Does it turn easily? Is there any leaking out the weep hole on the water pump? Is the surface of the old pulley worn ? The pulley is an easy replace. If the pump bearing is bad, replace the pump, too.

 

I don't see any leakage as far as I can see. But if I remove the pulley, do I have to replace the bearing. And the Pulley turns easily.

Also, do you think it's just the pulley? Or could it be the bearing too and is it easy? I love my Jeep too much, I hate not being able to drive her.

Also, should the belt be tight or somewhat loose? Just for future tense.

Well, what could have caused this problem? And is replacing the Water Pump easy?

 

How much experience do you have working on cars? I did it by myself. They're so easy to get to on these 4.0's
Look up a tut on here and decide for yourself if your up for it but I would definitely give it a try, you'll be proud of yourself afterwords.

 

Also might want to replace the belt while you have it off, and clean/lubricate all the pulleys. JMO

 

The bearing are a moving part and tend to were out it not really to worry about. It could have been caused by by the bad bearing in the idler pulley going out and the pump finally gave lose. The are not that hard to change out. Just make sure you have everything you will need. Such as new antifreeze gasket hoses if needed and you may as well change out you t-stat and put a new belt and flush the cooling system.

 

^ and a breaker bar. I can almost guarantee you'll have at least one stuck bolt.

I just replaced my water pump and radiator over the weekend. It is fairly straight forward but takes a while because you need to remove some parts to have easy access to the water pump. I am fairly new to working on my own jeep, and it took me a total of 5 hours, but that is only because I ran into unexpected issues.
You should replace the pump, it was only about $45 at Napa.
I did the water pump, radiator, thermostat housing, thermostat and hoses. It is pretty straight forward once you start pulling it apart.
There are several threads on here and videos on how to do it, plus there are several guys on here that are extremely helpful if you run into issues.

 

Cost wise, how much did everything come out to be? The Water pump, radiator, thermostat housing, thermostat and hoses?

 

buy as much as you can local if theres any problem returning it wont be as much of a hassle and wont have to wait for the fedx man.

Total was about 300 for parts, but that is everything. If you cant afford that, you could get away with less parts considering what shape they are in.
