Default 94 Cherokee Engine Swap

OK. I need some advice. I have a '94 Jeep XJ 4.0 liter with 266,800 miles on it. Needless to say, it's time to do an engine swap. I'd do a rebuild, but having an engine with this many miles on it, the chances are there's going to be something cracked, overworn, etc. I've been on the prowl for new engines for the swap, and I've found a few of them; some good, some not so good. The place where I always take my Jeep to do the major fixes I can't preform myself, informed me they can do this swap, AND order the engine. The man from this shop is telling me this engine he would order comes with new oil pan, etc. (but my opinion is, if there isn't anything wrong with the parts from my old Jeep engine, why not just reuse them? If it ain't broke, don't fix it; am I right or wrong?) Plus, he told me he recommends that I replace all valves, hoses, wires, etc., just to have everything new and equally operable.....all for one easy payment of about $2600-2700 dollars.(NOTE: This price is for parts only- it would be about $800 dollars extra for labor....I've checked around, and this is about the same labor charge everyone is using). Somebody on here that knows what they're talking about, PLEASE get back to me on this. Is this guy right? Or am I on the verge of getting jipped?

I think he's trying to rip you off. Sure if something is obviously worn out or needs to be replaced you replace it.

Hi and welcome to CF from Tj...
IMHO that's a RIPOFF. You can get a GOOD JY motor and put an ad on CL for a mechanic to put it in...just my 2cents...Tj

Also, the clutch is the original, and needs to be replaced. The same guy who said he would do the engine swap, said he would advise me to replace the clutch and the engine at the same time. He claims it would save me money on labor in the long run, rather than doing two separate jobs and paying for labor. What do yall think? Thanks in advance for the responses. I really appreciate it!!

I've done a few swaps on other vehicles and have found that long blocks are the way to go. Everything is either new or reconditioned and probably under some warrantee. I will probably be swapping my XJ motor out this summer with 266K miles and have seen rebuilts for around $1500. You should look at the rest of your jeep too to make a decicion as to whether it's worth while to sink the money into when it. If everything else is in good shape like mine then go for it. JMHO

Oh yeah if the clutch is going, definitely do that at the same time. It will have o come off anyway and you don't want to be dropping the tranny in a few months to replace the clutch.

Thank all of yall so much for taking the time to answer me back. Now I have some direction! I bought this Jeep when I was 16, and I've had it ever since. It's been the only vehicle I've ever had. Pathetic? Nope. Badass? Very. Thanks again!

I would definitely replace the clutch while you have it apart, just did mine then had to replace the tranny 2 months later. Check the throw out and pilot shaft bearing while your at it, and also a leaky clutch slave cylinder can cause lots of grief.

Default Same thing here. Good advice

I have a 93 Cherokee with 130k. Just had to drop the tranny to change out the throwout bearing and starter. Plan to be doing an engine swap if i can find something beastly that fits (any advice anyone?) and am gonna have to drop the tranny back out when I find a motor. /cry
