Default 93 4.0 vs 88 4.0

i have an 88 2 door xj pioneer with a 4.0 5 speed that has a knock. i found a guy that has a rebuilt 4.0 from a 93 grand cherokee it was an automatic model. will this engine work in my 88? it is a complete turn key engine with 30k miles on it since the rebuild. if it will work in it would in need to take the computer from his car or anything else?

they have different EFI systems, and heads, not 100% but I am pretty sure, you have a renix and the 91+ have the H.O. engines

close, both are port FI, but the heads and all the emission controls, as well as the electronics are WAY different. if you swap in everything from the 93 it should work, though idk if the gauge cluster plugs are the same.

87 to 90 use the Reanult/Bendix or Renix style head and fuel injection sytems. You can do the swap you will need everything that controls the engine and tranny out of the 93,and I mean everything.
