Default 91 exhaust manifold on an 88?

I have an 88 cherokee i need a new exhaust manifold for... i like the design of the stock 91+ manifold better. i would need to block off (eliminate) the egr and upgrade to the newer down pipe, but other than than should it bolt up? differences with exhaust ports? any clearence issues with the intake or steering etc.... thanks for any input!

Dont think so, the intake sits a bit higher on the renix than the ho so i think the manifold will hit the renix intake in spots. The intakes are shaped totally different. The exhaust ports are exactly the same on both heads. Intake ports are different.

For it to work you would need ho head, intake, computer, harness, manifold, exhaust, sensors.

It fits just fine on the head. I've done 2 of them.

No bung for the EGR. No bung for the O2 sensor. Have an O2 sensor bung welded into your new downpipe. The wires will reach.

Actually, I've put 2 HO motors into Renix Jeeps with no issue. I used HO exhaust manifolds. Here's a write-up I did outlining the swap just to clear up any confusion for those interested.

Cruiser’s HO into Renix Swap
This swap is easier than some will lead you to believe, generally those who have never done it. Those of us who have done it, like myself, will share with you the things that need to be done for a successful swap. Just think of it as swapping in a long block.
The HO and Renix have some differences but none that can’t be overcome very easily.
Any HO engine from an XJ or ZJ through 1998 can be used. One running change was that the rear of the head was no longer drilled and tapped for the temperature gauge sender beginning in the 96 model year. The sender can be relocated to the threaded hole in the thermostat housing taken from the HO engine. You’ll have to extend the wire to that location. Some brave souls even drill and tap the HO head for the sender.
You will be using the intake and exhaust manifolds from your Renix, along with all your sensors and wiring. Since the intake ports of the HO are slightly different, you use the Renix gasket. Exhaust ports are identical.
You will need to use your Renix distributor as it is different than the HO because they use different fuel management systems. The flywheel or flexplate from the Renix must be used so your CPS gets the correct signals. The valve cover from the Renix allows you to keep your CCV system intact and requires no modifications.
The HO block will have a plug in the coolant galley on the driver’s side of the block, closest to the front, which needs to be removed so your Coolant Temp Sensor can be installed in it’s place just as it is on the Renix. It requires a 5/16" square drive or a modified 3/8" drive that has been ground down to fit. Do this before installing the engine.
As for the knock sensor, which is located just above the oil pan on the driver’s side of the engine about mid way, all the blocks I’ve seen are threaded for it. If not, I’ve heard they may be drilled but not tapped. Tap the hole if that’s the case.

thats what i was hoping for... i was gonna pick up a newer down pipe (91+) cuz they have the 02 bung... so i can just get me a stock 91+ manifold or maybe a aftermarket header for a 91...? thanks!

Done both. Manifold and header. Work fine. Have a muffler shop make you a headpipe without the "crush" in it and pick up a few ponies.

Thanks cruiser! I currently have an HO motor on the engine stand that im putting into my jeep and wanted to put a header on it that will work in my 90, everything i found said you couldnt do it. Good to know that you can!! Sorry for the confusion.

So to clarify a little, you can put a header in but need to modify it to match the downpipe or do you need the ho downpipe also?

How did you do it cruiser, your writeup doesnt cover it.

Yep already have the renix gasket, im just wondering about the manifold/downpipe and how you did yours?

Replace the whole downpipe or modify the new header to fit?

Installed the engine with the HO manifold/header. Drove to muffler shop. Had a headpipe made without the "crush" and routed to clear the front driveshaft. Bung welded into downpipe for O2 sensor.

Be aware that sometimes you have to file the intake manifold a little bit where it meets up with the exhaust manifold/header at the rear. Super easy.
