91' cherokee, renix?
i went to go look at an xj down the street from me today its a 91' with 166k. from what i remember, 91s are still in the renix years. although i briefly owned an 89' i know very little about these renix systems and after a little google searching i still don't know much more. my questions are, what exactly is the renix system? (in terms i would understand) and how does that affect me being able to wrench on the jeep myself. also don't the cooling systems differ from what i'm used to with my 96? i'd really like to get it but i don't want to get into more then i can handle with an older renix jeep, what are yall suggestions?
*mods i considered posting this in cherokee chat, if you think it belongs there by all means do whatcha gotta do

Nope, 1990 was the switchover year. 89s are definitely RENIX and 91s are definitely ChryCo OBD I. My 91 XJ Sport has a ChryCo 4.0 HO motor in it.

Yup the 91s should be the 4.0 HO. The 1990 was the last year for a renix. Basically as far as being different, it doesnt have an actual test port like OBD1 and OBD2 (well it does but you need a special scan tool) Also the renix engines made less HP and the throttlebody is different from the newer models. TPS was adjustable, and there is no check engine light. Being a 91 it should be OBD1 and have a different throttle body from the renix models. The cooling system should also not be closed system like the renix models.

The RENIX years are 87-89. When we refer to the RENIX XJs we are refering to the RENIX company which made the fuel injection system and electronics that AMC put in the XJs over those years. It is a French company and not known for it's good reliability. However, for the RENIX style 4.0s there is literally a butt ton of information available online to troubleshoot the different sensors. You are right about the cooling systems, too. The RENIX year XJs had the closed cooling system while the 91 (I'm not sure about the 90s) and later have the improved open cooling system. My 91 has the open cooling system so I'm sure about that. I hope this helped you out.
