Does anyone have any input on a water pump for a 1990 xj 4.0 what brand, any tips, what direction does it flow reverse?? Flowkooler a good option . This is my first install of a water pump, for my 90 xj why are some parts hard to get for a 90?

As to what is needed: basic tools will do the job, no special tool needed.
There are how-to's on the net. A Haynes manual or better, a factory service manual is very helpful, this goes for everything you would like to do on your jeep, also in the future.
THe wp was my first 'big' job on the XJ and back then, as a complete newb to car stuff, pulled it off with a FSM at hand and w/o much trouble.
Brand: check on Rockauto.com, several available, depending on budget and preference. Omix-Ada (US Motorworks) and 4Seasons are examples of good ones.
Not sure with what you mean by "Flowkooler" in regards to waterpump install.
Members with more experience with your '90 might want to add any special tips in changing the wp for that year/era.

If you have a dremel, I would cut out a section of the fan shroud on the top for removing the fan. This way you don't have to remove the shroud and radiator and ****. It's what i did when I replaced mine and made a world of difference.

Second, cutting out the top section of the shroud!? That would be a non-smart thing to do aince your shroud is designed to function the way it should with the shape it is in.....cutting out the most important section of it will render your shroud practically useless...and makes you more prone to overheating.

First off, you don't have to remove the radiator at all to replace the waterpump.
