'90 4.0L Brakes are hard as a rock, troubleshooting tips?
Hi,
I newly bought a cherokee and I'll be trying to fix the problems, I'm not a mechanic, but I've done alot of car repairs on a hobby basis. I can also get a mechanic to help me.
Anyhow, the brakes are not working as they should, when I push on the brake pedal it is just as if the car was not running, it applies the brakes, but I have to use alot of force to get it to slow down.
I gotten a tips to look at the vacume, I'll try and have a look at the car this weekend. Until then I'm hoping to scavenge information and help from you guys
How should I troubleshoot this problem, what's the steps and in what order should I go through them?
I've gotten a couple of pictures of the brake master. Where should I check that there is vacume? Could the problem be 34, is this the pump that makes the vacume?

not sure what 4 is but no the booster is not shown in the pic. the booster is the big black round thing directly behind thr master. that whole assembly in that pic is bolted to the booster. there should be one large vacuum line runing to it

The system in the drawings is a 4 wheel ABS system, it does not have a vacuum booster, it uses an accumulator to assist with braking. If that is the same system that is on your Jeep, you may have to buy a whole new booster/master cylinder assembly. They are not cheap. Better poke around under the hood and see if there is a vacuum booster in there, it is a black round can looking thing behind the master cylinder and bolted to the firewall.

Had that issue in an s-10. I fixed it by unplugging the power into the abs unit. I haven't had a Jeep with abs yet, so don't know how they are set up, but in theory if you cut the power to the brain it will quit functioning and therefore quit malfunctioning. In the s-10 the only consequence was that the brake light stayed on.

I think the removal of the fuse helped a bit, it went from rock hard to just hard =) at least it is driveable now.
