Angry 89 xj 4.0 oil pan gasket

I own an 89 xj and needed to replace the oil pan gasket. I jacked it up removed tires so the axle would drop removed the starter and dropped the pan. I installed the new gasket with RTV on the corners for added seal. I put the pan back up and tightened everything down. Still leaking:/. I've had to drop the pan 2 times now to see what was happening. The part on the gasket that covers the RMS. seems to be slipping off the pan causing a not so good seal. Any tips tricks or anything to keep me from dropping the pan yet again?

Maybe it's the rear main seal itself leaking? Also, there's a clamp like piece that goes on there over the oil pan. Did you use the one piece rubber gasket?

The RMS is new. My oil pan was leaking from the front so I replaced it. Now it's leaking from the rear. The U shaped grove on the back of the pan keeps sliding off into the pan. I've tried rtv to hold it in place. No luck. I am putting the gasket directly to the motor and letting the rtv set up for a couple hours. Maybe that will work?

And yes I'm using the one piece rubber gasket.

Using contact cement to hold gasket to pan works best.jm2cw

Pick up six screws that thread into the block about 1 1/2 long, cut the heads off, thread into block, slide the gasket over and use cotter pins pinching the screws to hold gasket in-place. Position oil pan inplace and pull the cotter pins out. Works great for me.
