89 steering column

Engine: 4.0L
89 steering column
My steering column is broken I cannot tightend it up because the inside peice that it screws to is in pieces. My mechanic says I need a new column. Does anyone know if I can use any other year on my 89 or a alternate solution? Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.
