sub'd, be intersested to see what you guys come up with.
with all this talk of timming and fuel issues, i would be interested to see if you verified "true" timming as in crank/cam position in relation to dist timming.(not trying to troubleshoot, but more thinking out load that it would at least light if all were well on starting fluid)

Hello all, new to the forum.. i've searched all over the place and am desperate for some kind of answer.. I have a 89 Cherokee 4.0 with Auto trans that was manufactured 5-89 and i believe it is a Renix. Anyway it was running great until one day it just wouldn't start. It cranks and cranks, nothing. I have replaced the coil, and even the distributor.. all new plugs, I am getting hot spark to the plugs and everywhere i test it. I am getting fuel to the engine with good pressure. I spray starting fluid and it just cranks and cranks and then eventually backfires.. it won't even run for a second.. I would think with starting fluid it would run for atleast a second or 2,but it won't... would this be a cps problem or maybe a computer problem?? thanks much!!

Craig, have you visited www.cruiser54.com yet?
You should complete Tips 1,3,4, and 5 first.
Then we can walk you through a good diagnostic.

Cruiser, I am having a similar issue. I have completed steps 1-11, 18 and 23, and I recently eliminated my C101. Next is 29 (working on those grounds)
It has been running great but just recently is started having intermitted issues turning over. Now it just won't. I have spark, and I sprayed a little starting fluid in the hose over the air filter and it started right up and ran great.
Should I continue with 29? I am also going to re-test my ground at the TPS tonight. I don't know much about the jeep except what I have learned through your site and similar web research. I don't which relays on the passenger inside fender are what, but I think one is the fuel pump relay?
Should I start a new thread with this?

Thanks, Cruiser. I am going to start it tonight, hope to finish it by Friday (I only get 2 nights a week to work on it) and I will let you know. Thanks again!

For what it's worth, I managed to get the back panel off to expose the fuel pump ground, but I ran out of darkness.
After reading other threads, and discovering what the heck the fuel rail was (I'm not very mechanical), I tested for fuel and had zero pressure at the rail. I do have a Renix Monitor if any readings of that would help (although I also realized the air cleaner hose on the throttle body ripped, so gotta fix that now, too. But I found an adapter and gonna try a hose from a 97 to see if I can make it work for now.)
I will report back after the fuel pump ground.

Fuel pump ground added. Still won't turn over. And I was totally wrong. I DO have fuel at the rail. I used to be able to hear the pump for a bit when I turned the key, so I made a bad assumption (and forgot to turn the key the first time. DOH.) I know I started to drain my battery with all the cranking, so hope I didn't hurt the starter, either (is that possible?) So it seems like I have everything needed for it to start, I think. What should the readings be on my fuel pump? I will also see what my CPS is putting out tomorrow. I replaced it a year ago (it barely but out .3 volts but it turned over every time).
I am also borrowing a fuel pressure gauge, and a compression gauge and ignition spark "light" thing from work to confirm no issues there.
Should I move this to it's own thread?

Didn't get a chance to borrow the gauges yet. I ripped that rubber air box hose to my throttle body and had to rig up a replacement, but got it. Did measure my CPS and it was at .351. This is the same voltage that CPS has had for over a year now when I replaced it then. So after I put on that new hose contraption and trickled charged the battery, still wouldn't start, then a few minutes later it started right up about 7 times, then went right back to crank/no start. I DO hear the fuel pump prime occasionally new. The only thing I did between no-start/start was disconnect the starter from the solenoid to check connections.
Anyway, hoping to get the gauges (or rent them) this week and will report back.

Hello
I'm also having a crank no start issue on an 89 XJ. This is what I've tried so far:
1- New ignition coil
2- check for spark with inline tester. Spark from ICU to distributor cap. I have spark from cap to all cylinders.
3. New CPS (Dorman), new fuel resistor ballast
4. battery tested good
5. fuel pressure at fuel rail
6. jumped fuel pump at relay. i can hear the pump going
7. map sensor replaced over a year ago.
I haven't driven it in over a year but i would start it up once a week for about 15 minutes. Last week it just wouldn't start anymore.
Things I've noticed:
About February i went to warm it up and possibly the throttle got stuck causing the jeep to rev high and i turned it off after like 5 seconds. I sprayed linkage a TB and started it back up with no issues. I also notice that the linkage doesn't seem to close all the way and i need to manually movie in place
2- at the starter relay there is rotted cable that's loose not sure what its for. I stripped the cable back wrapped the wire around the terminal temporarily.
3- in cold weather I'm getting a hissing sound when it turns on.
All questions and suggestions welcomed.
Thanks
